Halloween Book Tag!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN everyone!!
Today I present to you the Halloween Book Tag! Usually I don't post tags on a Saterday but since today is HALLOWEEN, I thought what better day to post this fitting book tag:

1. Favorite Horror Book
http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1397129324l/20703750.jpg Charming by Krystal Wade

I just finished this book 2 days ago (in the middle of the night which might have not been the brightest idea) and IT. IS. AMAZING!
The only thing that bothered me was that it was so short, I really wish it would have been longer...
My full review of this will come tomorrow, so stay tuned:)

2. Scariest Moment In A Book You've Read
I thought a while about this one but in the end came up pretty much empty. I mean, there sure have been moments when something happened in a book that scared the shit outta me but I just can't remember anything specific so ... yeah, no real answer I guess :P

3. Would you or have you ever dressed up as a book character?
No! I mean yes, I would of course but never have. Okay, that's confusing. I would totally go as a book character on Halloween, probably as Katniss (classic one) or someone from Harry Potter, I haven't read the books yet (HP) but they have cool school uniforms sooo... ;-)

4. What do you think your favorite fictional character would dress up as on Halloween?
Well, I don't exactly have "one favorite character" but I'm just going to pick Katy and Daemon from the Lux series and they would totally go as Gizmo and Spike and actually I know that because Jennifer L. Armentrout wrote a bonus scene about Katy and Daemon going Halloween shopping! So I kind of cheated I guess :D
>> Bonus scene: https://www.wattpad.com/102775867-lux-series-extras-daemon-and-kat-go-halloween

5. What is your favorite type of horror?
I like anything with horror! My perfect mix for horror is probably thriller and spooky *cough* Charming *cough*

6. If books were as cheap as candy which book would you give to trick or treaters?
Oh wow, this is a hard one. I think I might give them a book that's awesome but underrated and underhyped, you know, to support the novel and the author. I'll choose Broken Skies by Theresa Kay for this question just because first, I really enjoyed it and second, I still feel like not enough people know and have read the book.

7. Halloween TBR
I actually wrote a full post about this so you can read this HERE :) (It's not long, don't worry)

8. Recommend some  Halloween reads!
Ugh, that's hard :D
I haven't read so many horror-ish books but here's my list:
  • EVERYTHING by R. L. Stine
  • Charming by Krystal Wade
  • Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children
  • Wish You Were Dead by Todd Strasser
  • The Murder Complex duoligy by Lindsay Cummings
  • Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick
  • All the books by Stephen King (that's not the title :P)

Alright! Here we are again in the land of the living! (I don't know... it's late)
Thanks for reading! Make sure to follow so you won't miss any future posts!

Popular Books I Haven't Read (yet)

Hey lovelies!
I thought it would be a fun idea to share with you popular books and book series I haven't read. YET at least.
So let's get straight into it!

1.  HARRY POTTER by J. K. Rowling
3DON'T SHOOT! I know, I know I should have read these by now. And probably more than just once. Actually I don't even have a good excuse but the reason why I haven't read them by now is probably that my family aren't the biggest fans of fantasy books and movies and always kind of talked me out of it when I was a child. (Now, that I have my own interests in books, which ARE fantasy btw, of course they are completely denying having ever said anything negative). I actually already own two books of the series: The first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and the second, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the thing about the second is just that it's translated into a language I don't understand so obviously I can't read it but, you know, I got it for free and - seriously, who says NO to a free book?
And I am planning to read the series once I bought all the books because I want to read-a-thon them so I don't have to deal with cliffhangers and book hangovers.

2.  A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE by George R. R. Martin
11264999This is also a very famous and popular TV show known as Game Of Thrones.
I haven't read the series yet (obviously since that's what this is all about) nor have I watched it. Yeah, I do not know why because I really want watch it and be a part of this fandom but I'm not too sure about reading Game of Thrones because these books are just so big, it's intimidating!
But if you have read them, comment down below and tell me what you thought about them and if I should change my mind.

3.  PERCY JACKSON by Rick Riordan
28187 I'm also super unsure about this one. By now I read quite a few books about greek mythology and I very much enjoyed those but it's still not my favorite element in YA.
I know a lot of people, almost everyone who read the series actually, LOVE the books but I don't know, I guess if I had absolutely nothing to read I would pick them up but at the moment I just have so many books I'm dying to read and, honestly, Percy Jackson is not really at the top of this list.
But again if you think I should read it, tell me! :-)

4.  THE LORD OF THE RINGS & THE HOBBIT by J. R. R. Tolkien
590733 I LOVE the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies! They are fantastic and I love watching them but here it's the same like Game of Thrones, THEY ARE SO BIG AND LONG AND OMG NOT SURE IF I WILL EVER GET MYSELF TO READ THEM. But you never know what happens, in fact 2 years ago I was completely sure I would never Harry Potter and now look at me; still haven't read it but will happen ... eventually - I think you get my point...

5. THE VAMPIRE DIARIES by L. J. Smith
395922 I don't think I will ever read this series just because it doesn't look like something I would enjoy and I'm also not really into vampire books anymore. I did read Twilight, loved it for the time being but now I'm just kind of "over" this. The only vampire book series I'm going to continue is The Vampire Academy because it's awesome. Yep, that's my reason.
However, I did watch the TV show and actually really loved the first 4 to 5 seasons but then I felt like the plot is on repeat. Someone switches off their emotions and shuts down their humanity, someone else dies but is not really dead because, apparently, somehow you can get them back! Oh, and of course there's a love to confess but that's not gonna happen because that would destroy the friendship and make everything complicated and that way it just goes on and on and on. I think at some point you should know when to stop producing a series, give it a worthy ending and let fans remember it as good instead of going on when it should have ended two seasons ago.

6.  PRETTY LITTLE LIARS by Sara Sheperd
162085  This is also a series that I know I'm probably never going to read. I think the whole series has a total of 16 or 17 books and I just don't see myself reading these anytime soon - or ever for that matter. Also, I haven't even watched the TV show so far but I'm actually thinking about giving it a shot because my friend loves it and it does have quite good reviews. But reading? Nah, not really.

Okay! I hope you enjoyed my rambling and leave a comment:-)
Of course these are not all of the popular books and series I haven't read yet but i think these are really the most "famous" ones I have yet to read. Anyway if you would like me to write such a post again, let me know!
Thank you so much for reading! And hit the follow button for more of these posts!

Top 5 Wednesday: Top Authors I discovered this year

https://d.gr-assets.com/groups/1384571121p8/118368.jpg
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly book meme hosted by Lainey (gingerreadslayney on YouTube) over on Goodreads. Check it out!

Top 5 authors I discovered this year

5. Alexandra Bracken
 http://images.popmatters.com/news_art/d/darkestmindsseries.jpg
I love everything about this series! It has great characters, it has a great premise and just overall it all fit together. I love Alex' writing and CANNOT WAIT FOR PASSENGER!!

4. Victoria Aveyard
https://p.gr-assets.com/540x540/fit/hostedimages/1404237016/10212034.jpg
Red Queen was the first high-fantasy book I read. And, honestly, I haven't been too much into fantasy (now I'm absolutely in love with this genre...) but, for me, this was the perfect introduction. Victoria writes in a very action-packed way with short sentences which add to the tension but that really fit to the plot and the characters. so excited for Glass Sword...

 3. Sarah J. Maas
https://thoughtfultomes.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/smaas-tog-series.pnghttp://sarahjmaas.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/79329_original-197x300.jpg
http://sarahjmaas.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/77493_original.jpg

You probably all know the ToG series and if you don't, READ IT! I can only recommend it! Sarah J. Maas' books are amazing and all totally epic - like every single one of them. They made me fall for high-fantasy recently :-)

2. Jennifer L. Armentrout
Okay, I think you all know how much I love Jennifer's books and her writing. It's fun, it's funny, it makes me cry, it makes me laugh. She`s my all time favorite YA/NA author.

 1. Diana Gabaldon
 http://www.ksharonk.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/outlander-book-series.jpg
So far I have only read Outlander yet but I FREAKING LOVE IT!! I'm so happy I picked it up even though I never catched up with the TV show, I still enjoyed every bit of it. There's something special about Diana Gabaldon's writing that I can't really put my finger on, but even if nothing at all happens you're not bored or anything, you just want to read on and see what happens next. Outlander is my favorite book ever. Read my full review HERE

Meeting Victoria Aveyard!

Hi guys!
In today's post I want to talk a little bit about the signing of Victoria Aveyard, author of Red Queen, that I've been to:

I LOVE Red Queen! So when I heard that she came into a city nearby to mine you can imagine that I practically hyperventilated...
http://31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lr63fm7Tgi1r0ojhto1_500.gif
The thing was that none of my friends (who actually do read now and then) had read the book, let alone knew the author, and I got the tickets pretty much last-minute so they didn't really have the chance to read it before the signing. But I was able to convince my parents to go with me and even though at first they weren't too glad about that I think in the end they actually quiet enjoyed it:-)
The whole event took about an hour and a half and it started off with the interviewer asking Victoria a few question. The most exciting news were definitely that RED QUEEN WILL BECOME A MOVIE!!!
http://25.media.tumblr.com/18cb6ea4dc8b160bc4eed26e81913b49/tumblr_mjmf400Bsf1r470jeo1_500.gif
And also, if you haven't heard it yet, instead of 3 the series is going to have 4 BOOKS! OMG, I'm so so happy about that!!
When the whole interview and questions from the audience part was done we could go to Victoria and let our book get signed. We talked a little and she's really such a nice person and I'm not just saying that.

Okay, that's actually it! If you haven't read Red Queen yet, I can only recommend it to you. And if you have already read it, the first chapter of Glass Sword is now online! Read it and tell me what you thought about it in the comments;-)

Thanks for reading!

Book Review: Broken Skies by Theresa Kay

Hi everyone! Today I finally have a review for you again. This week it's of Broken Skies by Theresa Kay. It's the first book in an upcoming trilogy!

***I received this book in an exchange for an honest review***

Broken Skies is about Jax, a girl who lives in a world where aliens live on earth. And you might think that they're fighting against the humans and trying to take over the planet but actually they're pretty much ignoring everyone. And after a war there aren't many humans left anyway. Which adds to them struggling to stay alive.
One day Jax's brother is taken by the aliens and she's determined to get him back - with the help of another alien, Lyr, who was left behind by the abductors.

I hope my summary wasn't too confusing I'm not really good at writing them :D
But anyway, here's what I thought about the book:

First of all, the story had everything! It was fast-paced, there was action, there was romance, it was a survival story at some point and it had aliens. What else could you want?
Also, there was so much character developement - especially when you look at Jax. She is a very realistic character and went through so much in her life; she never got to know her mom because she died when Jax was born and she lost her Dad and really the only one she has left is her twin-brother Jace. But when he was gone Jax needed to become independent and make things work out herself. Of course she had help from Lyr but ultimately she had to find the way to her brother and the city herself.
Which brings us to Lyr (somehow :D). Guys, I think I have a new fictional boyfriend! Although at times I was not sure if it's save to trust him, but actually you can never fully trust anyone in this book except Jax! I was always like "Hm, can you trust them or will they betray Jax? Damn, I don't know!" As you can see, I would totally suck in her situation. I think, I can't write much about Lyr or it'll get too spoilery...
Before he's kidnapped, we see Jace spending some time with Jax. They're really, really close and I loved seeing how much he cared about her and, if I'm honest, how much he gave up for her. She's broken, she says so several times herself, and can't really deal with everything but Jace is always there, holding her together.

All in all, I ADORED this book. I wish I would have picked it up earlier and I need Fractured Suns like yesterday :-) If you liked
Obsidian and The 5th Wave I promise you, you're are going to love Broken Skies!
Thanks for reading! Leave a comment and tell me what is your favorite YA alien book? I think mine is either this one or Obsidian... it's hard to choose :-)

BIG thank-you to Theresa Kay! :)

My 5 favorite supporting characters in YA

Hey fellow book lovers!
We all have our favorite characters in books. Sometimes they're funny, sometimes they're reckless or sometimes they're just doing exactly what we would have done in a certain situation. But they aren't always the main part in a book. That's why, today I'm presenting to you my 5 favorite supporting characters in books!

from The Murder Cumplex by Lindsay Cummings
Koi is Meadow's brother in The Murder Complex. The reason why I chose him is that he's such a great big brother for his two sisters. He looks after them and is very protective even though he knows that Meadow is strong and can handle things on her own. He really grew to me throughout the story :-)

#4
https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5195a492e4b0b0879dc4155e/51e6df56e4b071c85f0bd3d9/54ba0db0e4b077c9026e7551/1440654175812/?format=1000w
Charles a.k.a. "Chubs"
from The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
I love Chubs! I love how he cares for his friends, his nerdiness and just his overall personality. He's also funny once he opens up and so smart he sees through everyone who's messing with him and his friends. He's the perfect best friend.

Dee
from the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Dee is a pink-cupcakes-with-glitter-sprinkles-princess, but still badass as hell! She's awesome, basically the pefect female best friends; she loves shopping, books and is super nice. You can't deny that she went to some big character developement but in the end she's our happy camper again :-D

Rowan
from Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3) by Sarah J. Maas
Okay, so here's the reason he's my no. 2: He's hot, hot, hot!! Like seriously omg! In the beginning he was a total douche (to say it nicely) and I was like "um, here's some major character developement needed, please! Thank you". And it came! By now he's really my second favorite character in the Throne of Glass series (after Celaena) and I think he's actually on his way to become one of the main characters (if he isn't already one!)

And #1 is...

(drum roll, please)

http://img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140218191333/thehungergames/images/0/00/Quarter_quell_finnick.jpg
Finnick Odair!
from Catching Fire (The Hunger Games #2) by Suzanne Collins
Why is Finick my number one on the list? Well, two reasons: First, he's super hot and attractive and second, he's funny and charming! Remember the sugar - scene from Catching Fire? Hilarious! And then he has this more serious side to him: Especially when he's with Anne. The love between them is just bitter-sweet and beautiful at the same time. My heart still aches for what happened in Mockingjay (if you haven't read it yet, it's your own fault! Sorry, but what are you doing with your life? Read it!) and when he married Anne... because, you must know, I totally ship him with myself but
http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131214200624/glee/images/4/49/3086808721_1_5_qdWvW4su.gif . I forgive him.

YAY! These are my top 5 favorites at the moment! Maybe if everything changes in a year or so (yes, I'm absolutely planning on still having this blog in a year and hopefully many more:-)) I'll post an updated version.
But for now thank you so much for reading this silly (it was really late when I wrote this so I hope you excuse...) post and enjoyed it! Leave a comment and tell me Who is YOUR favorite character?

Alice in No-Man's-Land: Excerpt, guest post & giveaway!!

I'm so excited to be a part of the blog tour for James Knapp's newest YA novel, ALICE IN NO-MAN'S-LAND!
ALICE IN NO-MAN'S-LAND is a Young Adult, Alice in Wonderland, Sci-fi re-imagining that is just in time for the 150th Anniversary.
Make sure to click one of the buy links below to grab your copy, and make sure to enter the giveaway at the bottom!

About ALICE IN NO-MAN'S-LAND:
When her escape pod falls to earth, crashing in Ypsilanti Bloc, privileged seventeen-year-old Alice Walshe is dashed from the wonderland of wealth and prosperity into a ruined, walled city overrun with militias, gangs, and even cannibals. On top of this horror, her younger brother’s escape pod is missing.

Alice isn’t naïve – she’s always known blocs like Ypsilanti exist, left behind after a foodborne illness ravished the country decades earlier and left pockets of severe urban decay in its wake. Men like her father - a major player at Cerulean Holdings - renew the devastated blocs and bring stability back into the areas. But, Ypsilanti is even worse than the tales she’s heard, and rumor has it the bloc is faced with the threat of extermination by Cerulean, not renewal.

Trapped within Ypsilanti’s borders and left for dead, Alice teams up with a pair of teen scavengers who tracked the wreck of her pod. Despite their rough exterior and vulgar speech, they’re her only option for navigating the hostile and violent environment of Ypsilanti, finding her brother, and getting out of No-Man’s-Land alive.

GUEST POST BY JAMES KNAPP
about his inspirations and ideas for the book:

All of the characters in the story are, while heavily fictionalized versions of them, based on the types of people I've met and worked with throughout my life. I've known plenty of folks like Alice, and I've known plenty of people like Basilio and Maya (Basilio in particular is based on a guy I used to wait tables with long, long ago). I like underdogs, and a lot of the people in this story are underdogs if not by nature then by circumstance. That includes Ypsilanti Bloc as well (the area where the majority of the story takes place). For those not from the region, Ypsilanti is a real place (though a much nicer one than appears in the novel) and its appearance here is meant to demonstrate how any town or city, regardless of how developed, is vulnerable to decay. When I was younger, I travelled around New England and the surrounding states a lot and during those travels I saw small towns reduced to shadows of what I assumed they once were - you could readily see signs that these areas had once thrived, but now when you walked down the street it wasn't unusual to see shopfronts boarded up and spray-painted over.

When an area becomes depressed, and the local populace becomes too strapped to support businesses like shopping centers, restaurants, etc. then those businesses in turn are eventually forced to pack up and move out, making it that much harder for residents to get by, which makes it less appealing for new businesses to move into the area, etc. Sometimes all it takes is for the one major business or industry that supported a town to either fold or move on to bring the rest of it down with them. In 'Alice in No-Man's-Land' I take this to an extreme, but it's not that far removed from reality. In the novel, a country-wide pandemic contributes to the decay of an abnormal number of areas inside the country. Once you have to deal with a massive breakdown and thousands of dead on top of everything else, it's not hard to imagine how lost certain areas could potentially get. In the novel it gets so bad that when things finally do begin to improve again society is unable to bring everything back to life. Certain areas end up getting 'backburnered', to be dealt with later when time and resources (and the political will) permit. They decide to wall off the remaining pockets of decay, but as often happens, once things improve the plight of those left behind becomes less of a priority and more of an inconvenience.

This is largely what drove me to write this book - at this point in my life I've lived on both sides of 'the wall' or 'the rabbit hole', and so the juxtaposition of it is real to me. I've never been as poor as the people of the bloc in the story, nor have I ever been as wealthy as Alice's family, but you don't have to exist at either extreme to see just how different life is when you have enough money and opportunities to live a life that is at least stable, and when you don't. It's not even really a political thing, it's a money thing - either you have the resources to live comfortably in society or you don't. In either situation, it doesn't take long for people to begin looking at the other side and forming opinions about them and their choices, fair or not. It's so easy to begin demonizing the 'other side', and you can see it playing out in reality even today. In these types of situations, either side will find itself willing to fight (for either change, or the status quo). Alice just happens to straddle both sides as she fights to save her own life, that of her little brother, and, along the way, some people who are a lot more like her than she may have thought before walking a literal mile in their shoes.

EXCERPT:

"Get back," Basilio said, stepping between us and pointing the barrel of his rifle up toward the man's face. Maya raised hers too, covering our rear as more and more of the people began to stir. Some climbed to their feet, while others lay trussed on their bedrolls, wrists bound with rope tied behind their backs. Their legs had been tied, too, and each of them had their lips clamped around a red, rubber ball gag. Each of their eyes had been covered with bandanas, tied tight across the back of their heads.
"Basilio..."
At a quick count, I thought there were maybe twenty-two of them, not including the little boy. Eleven were on their feet now, or close to it. The rest rocked on their beddings, squirming in what looked like agony. The man in front of Basilio began to reach for him.
“You move, I shoot you dead,” Basilio warned.
The man stopped with his hand still out. The skin there had been stained black, and he was missing the tip of his middle finger.
“What you doing here?” the man asked again.
“Shut up.”
The man lowered his hand and reached into his filthy jacket.
“I said don't move!" Basilio shouted. "Nobody move!"
The man pulled something out from inside his coat, but it wasn’t a gun. I realized it was a grenade just a second before he fumbled the pin out, and held it up where we could see.
"You no be here," the man croaked. His other hand seemed partially lame, barely holding down the grenade's flipper as he moved closer to us and Basilio backed into me, almost knocking me down.
"What the fuck?" Maya said. She moved the barrel of her rifle from side to side, not sure who she should aim at.
"You no be here!" the man shouted, flecks of spit spraying through the nest of his scraggly beard. He held the grenade out, almost dropping it.
“Whoa”, Maya hissed. "You'll die too you crazy p-head!"
"So will you," the man said.
“You drop that shit you’ll die too!”
“So will you!”
Yagas, I thought. The first time I heard the term was when Alex Ackerman became the first reality star to die on In the Zone. When it happened ratings had gone through the roof, and I hated to admit now that the time he’d spent missing had been more compelling than the show itself. When they finally found the cannibal wearing his clothes, his DNA all over it, the term had gone mainstream.
In the Zone got renewed for two more seasons, but I’d stopped watching. The yaga had scared me. Suddenly the whole thing stopped being fun, and it sure wasn’t fun now. With the lights on I could see that the cooking pots contained water, along with smaller bones. Two more empty cages had been set up down there as well, near the one with the boy in it. Suddenly all I could think about was how my friend Ellen and I had dressed as yagas one year for Halloween…

About James Knapp:
James Knapp was born in New Hampshire in 1970, and has lived in the New England area since that time. He developed a love of reading and writing early on, participating in young author competitions as early as grade school, but the later discovery of works by Frank Herbert and Isaac Asimov turned that love to an obsession.

He wrote continuously through high school, college and beyond, eventually breaking into the field with the publication of the Revivors trilogy (State of Decay, The Silent Army, and Element Zero). State of Decay was a Philip K. Dick award nominee, and won the 2010 Compton Crook Award. Ember, The Burn Zone, and Fallout were all written under the name James K. Decker.

He now lives in MA with his wife Kim.
